fair play to the 19 dixies that headed up to a windswept fairycastle, I was rattling with the cold by the time I headed down
First group off was the dh young guns - Greg Callaghan, Gavin Kelly, Gavin Carroll, Dan Sheridan, Paul Smyth, Mark Dolan
with some of them going through the rocks instead of to the right- crackpots, though they weren't the only ones who made-up there own route.....
The second group of Karl Thomas, Rob Drohan, Dave Foster, John Doris didn't fare much better turning left instead of right and ending up down near the upper aerials and having to scramble down to the fireroad - and these were the gown-ups
Third group was Steve Scrivener, Oisin Boydell, Enda O'Reilly, Karl Dempsey and Nigel Shekleton and were the first group to get their directions right, Oisin and Steve having a good scrap most of the way down, just 3 seconds serperating them at the end
Final group was Sean Herlihy, Fergal Kilkenny, Damo Mulchrone and Alfie Wallace, Alfie was an early victim of a puncture, the happy fairy and transporter bate off down the descent so fast it made me cry
Got a bit along the fireroad and witnessed what I thought was a man brought down by a sniper, the fairy didn't look too happy as he lay motionless on the side of the road, victim of one of the most bizarre accidents I've heard of in biking, I slowed but was told to keep going - very nice of a dying man not to delay another rider I thought then off I went.
First forest section was ok - you could see where you were going, the second was pretty dark - lights would have been handy.
The dh track flowed well into the lower part of the MADjestic course but was well sliddery, I fell into the ferny descent without the bike but had a soft nice landing
..and that was pretty much that!
hopefully see a few more out for more extreme orienteering next week

Things to do for Round 1
Work on the TToT as described on the MADjestic Blog needs to be finished
I then taped most of the the rock-n-roll section for the Tues race, there's more tape left and a bit more to do - should get this finished on Sat, so the tape should get all used-up ok.
Other stuff needing to be done for the Dash:
Have an arrow on the old fence after 2 rock showing people to turn right.
Paint rocks and logs white and have them stashed/hidden ready to be moved into position on Tues afternoon (I will do the moving-into-place stuff on Tues)
The locations where we need these logs rocks are as follows:
1- At the hole at the edge of the forest (you turn in left into this hole after the descent)
2- On the fireroad to show the right turn down into the section Steve and the lads cleared.
3- At Docking Bay 54 (may be marshalled also) showing riders to go up over hump
4- At the new entrance to rock-n-roll section that Morgan and the lads cleared
5- The exit from rock-n-roll to show the sharp right tun thru the gap in the trees, and the alternative easier line a little further on down.
6- The entrance to MADjestic (may also need some tape just to get people to turn left onto the trail once they come in through the gap.
I think that's about it.....

First race marshalling details
Start time/first group of riders is at 7:30
Conor, Judith and Rachel kindly said they'd help out.
Conor will do MADjestic, with Rachel doing the path between the 2 sections (split time) and Judith doing the finish (final time).
Rachel will be located on the top of the hump at Docking Bay 54 directing people up and over it to the path - markers will show the entrance into Rock n Roll.
Guide tape will be laid out within rock n roll.
Fergal will do the start and take names & give out numbers tec up at Fairycastle.
Numbers and timing sheets have been printed-off.
Guide markers will be done over the weekend and moved into place on Tues afternoon.

Route decision for first race
Round 1 will be run across the RED route.
See the links on this blog to show the Google Earth routes.
Route description as follows:
RED:
Fairycastle across to 2 rock, 2 rock to to the fence, then split right just before the fence.
then follow the trail all the way until the descent on the edge of the forest:

straight down the descent (pick your lines carefully) until the hole in the forest edge on your left:

in thru the hole:

..and meet-up with the fireroad and straight on.
Continue on fireroad until the right turn down over a small bridge and into the forest.
Follow this trail until it goes over a hump and then a sharp left-hander onto a dirt path, follow this along to a brand new entrance - up the hump and into the forest.
Once in the forest, right turn down the fast winding singletrack, eventually spitting you out at the clearing
Out of the forest, down the bank then immediately up over the hump which brings you into the open area.
Veer left, up a steep bank and into the DH track.
Follow this track and it will veer off left and eventually join up with the lower half of MADjestic/MAD freeride course and finish at the end of the very-fast ferny trail.
Temporary markers (white rocks/small logs) will be placed at key junctions.

Stuff we need
Walkie talkies - got 4 of them (Binatone) from Argos (99 euro)8km range, tested them during trailbuilding, seemed to work fine for hurling insults at fellow club members from a distance - but only a short distance - didn't work too well at trailbuilding on Sat when the distance was greater - changed them for a pair of Uniden ones - they seem better built, will be testing them out at some stage to see if they are better
Marker stakes/poles - need to make-up about 10 of them - white with red arows etc..
Marker powder/chalk spray, needs to be biodegradable but not too tasty so that the deer lick it off the rocks and logs, the flour idea of Morgan's may not be so bad considering.....
